John has known since he was a kid that he wants to be with Olivia. Ready to enact his plan, John “casually” reaches out to Olivia to be his pretend girlfriend while he goes overseas for some business meetings.
Olivia, needing some cash during her off season from the ballet agrees. She spends some of her time trying to convince herself that she’s only in it for the money and that her attraction to John is something new now that they’re both older. Will John break through her wall and get the girl next door?
A few things I didn’t love…
- Olivia does seem kind of superficial. The reader gets a clear view of past attraction, and other times it feels as though Olivia only cares for John now that he’s attractive and successful. It makes me less in her corner and a little sad because John deserves better!
- There’s drama over a potentially fake engagement to help his career as well. I think the implications for how John approaches problems would have larger effects than is really touched on. But, on the other hand, this is also an issue that plagues much of this genre.
Some things I did love…
- John is the nerd in high school that everyone loves now because he’s created tech that made a difference. Props for a real life example that’s on point for the world we live in today.
- John’s approach to problem solving seems in character for him and how he relates to the world. I still think having a relationship with him would be something to work through to find the right balance, but it feels realistic for who he is.
All in all, this was interesting enough that I picked up another novel by this author, so I’d give this one a read.

I wish I could say that was true. Just my silly promise to myself to fill in a blank page by publishing time and then forgetting to unschedule when I knew I wouldn’t make it. Now I’ll just have to fill it in after the fact I guess!!

Sounds like it would make a great movie! For some reason, I love these kinds of movies, but haven’t had as much success with reading them. Personal taste thing, I suppose.
